A Short Review of Recent Progress in Improving the Fracture Toughness of FRP Composites Using Short Fibers

Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composite laminates have excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and designability thus are widely used in various engineering fields. However, their interlayer performance is relatively poor due to no fiber reinforcement between the laminate layers. These layers adhered through resin bonding only, caused during usage, which results material delamination damage, thus, limiting its performance. In response, researchers conducted numerous studies on how improve interlaminate properties of component structural modifications composites toughening. Short toughening a simple effective way solve this problem. This paper reviews latest research progress short modified toughening, analyzes mechanisms bridging, debonding, fracture, specific different fibers. review also discusses current problems encountered provides an outlook future development direction for provide reference subsequent toughened composites.
